The pioneer of ‘Perfect 10’, Nadia Comaneci has publicly expressed her view on the scoring system of the Gymnastics criticizing now no gymnast can score a ‘Perfect 10’. The scoring system has been changed from the one which allowed Nadia Comaneci to become the first female gymnast to achieve this milestone. The current scoring system does not allow gymnasts to score a ten on ten, no matter how good they are.
Nadia Comaneci has expressed her views that the scoring system should be reverted back to what it was, to allow gymnasts to score a ten on ten if they deserve it. Nadia Comaneci achieved her ‘perfect 10’, when she was 14 only. She made this record in the 1976 Olympics, which took place in Montreal, Canada. The Romanian gymnast not only achieved this milestone during those Olympics, but also took away three gold medals during the games. Of a total of nine medals in her career, five are gold medals.
At that time, no one could even think of a ‘Perfect 10’, and that is why the scoreboards could not even show the figure 10. When Nadia Comaneci performed her act, the scoreboard showed 1.00, which left everybody, wondering as she has performed a lot better than scoring a 1.00. "I didn't understand what that meant, that's all they could show. I was a little frustrated at the beginning because I thought I did better than one" said Nadia Comaneci.
According to the new scoring system, in which a good score is between 15 and 16, a 10 is considered to be an ordinary performance by a gymnast. Nadia Comaneci believes that this is a great loss to the game, as achieving a ten on ten was a huge motivation for the players. It was a symbolic perfection that the gymnasts strived to achieve, and has hoped that the International Gymnastics Federation will consider bringing the ‘Perfect 10’ score back for perfect performances.
Nadia Comaneci is considered to be one of the most successful gymnasts from the past. Out of the total nine medals that she has won, five have been gold medals, two silver medals and a single bronze medal. In addition to her tally of medals, she has also been the world champion in her 10 year long career. She also enjoyed a lot of success in the Olympics 1980, where she won two gold medals and two silver medals.
