Apple's newest iPhone was selling briskly Thursday as thousands lined up outside stores around the world to become among the first to own the device amid concerns of supply shortages. (June 24)

Applemaniacs and tech-heads won’t have to wait much longer for the official iPhone 5 and the new mini-iPad announcement from the world's most valuable brand. According to an unnamed source, Rene Ritchie of iMore.com wrote this morning that Apple was planning on unveiling the newest installment of their iPhone product line on Sept. 12. Also to be unveiled, a new “mini iPad” that will be priced lower and will look to compete with Google’s Nexus 7. The iPhone 5, as it will likely be called, is said to have a release date some nine days after on Sept. 21.

Apple’s newest iPhone will be thinner, according to sources. The iPhone 5 will also have a larger screen, giving into market demand for larger screens on smaller, more pocketable devices. Also, be prepared to throw away your old iPhone chargers as the new iPhone is likely going to have a 19-pin port as opposed to the 30-pin port that the current iGadgets currently sport. This change in the size of the charger port will create an interesting situation where many of Apple’s complimentary devices, such as iHomes or car players, will become useless for the next generation. If Apple plans to release an adapter or just continue with all new products supporting the 19-pin setup remains to be seen.

The report of Apple’s supposed day of revealment comes shortly after the most likely pictures of what the iPhone 5 will look like leaked online this weekend. Judging by the pictures, it seems the iPhone has indeed undergone some aesthetic changes, now sporting a metallic back most similar to the company’s first iPhone release and a larger touchscreen.

What else can we expect from the new iPhone? I’m hoping for improved camera quality, improved Siri functionality and hopefully more options for customization. Though the latter is unlikely since one of the defining features of the iPhone is it’s simplistic and uniform setup.

It is also likely that we will start to see social media apps becoming native to these new devices with this newest release.

Final details and confirmation of the Sept.12 announcement date are sure to show their head in the coming weeks. Apple will undoubtedly have an event where they show off the final product and as well as the features that are new and exclusive to the new iPhone. I for one have no doubt that Apple will continue to innovate and reset the standard for smartphones with this upcoming release.
