Bible Verse of the Day
19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.
18 “‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.”
I am a big fan of movies, almost all types of movies from cartoon movies (like Shrek or Toy Story), to some “chick flicks”, Sports movies, etc…
But I will have to say one of my favorite movies are the ones in which someone has been wronged and somehow vengeance is achieved in one way or another. I am not sure why it is this type of movie that really gets my heart pumping, but it does.
I know some of it is that God created our hearts to seek justice (not forgetting grace along the way) after all we are made in His image.
So why would God tell us what He does in the scripture above?
Because there is a huge difference between revenge and justice.
The desire for revenge is motivated by hurt and anger that leads to bitterness and the callusing of our hearts. It cannot be done with a clear thinking head and it gives the enemy a huge foothold in our lives.
The desire for justice is to consider all aspects of what occurred looking for truth and giving the appropriate consequences. We can really never know all aspects of the truth and even being presented the facts we filter them through our thoughts and through our pasts to determine what is “truth”, which at best is a skewed perspective. That being said it is not wrong to desire and seek justice.
God says leave the vengeance to me for He knows it will kill our hearts and the ripple effects will ruin relationships to those near us. There is truly no win in revenge.
That being said my head screams” what about this, what about that?” and I want wrongs to be righted, but yet the best thing for my heart and the hearts of those I love is to let go and to leave the revenge to the Father.
This is one of those topics (like most of them) that I am right there with you in trying to live this in my life.
Let go for the sake of what is good, true and right…for you and for others.
Pray for me today as I pray for you…
Have a blessed day,
