And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of distress, and was with me in the way which I went.
-- Gen. 35:3 (KJV)
In this verse, Jacob explains why he followed God. First, Jacob states that God answered his cry when Jacob was in trouble. Only God can answer your plea for help from a supernatural perspective. Calling on another god means that you will just be waiting for the rest of your life.
The second reason is that Jacob says that God was with Jacob during times of trouble. Not only will God listen to your pleas for help, He will also guide you out of the debacle that you are in.
