Olympics organizers of the match at Hampden Park in Glasgow were embarrassed Wednesday after they made a grave mistake of displaying on a giant screen the women football team from North Korea alongside the South Korean flag.
The fiasco resulted in a delay of more than one hour with the North Korean team refusing to take the field in its opening match against Colombia.
North Korea coach Sin Ui-Gun said “yes we are angry because our players were introduced as if they are from South Korea, something that may affect us very greatly as you might know.”
Relations between the North and South Korea has been volatile, with a strong anti North Korea promoted in the South over its nuclear program and the North was angry at the South for having close ties with the US.
But the North Korean team finally relented and took the field beating its opponent 2-0.
Coach Sin Ui-Gun said “winning the game cannot compensate this. It is a different matter. We hope there is no repeat in the next matches.”
The organizers were ‘quick’ to apologise for their mistake saying there was no excuse for that ‘on the world stage’ even if the mistake was understandable with both flags bearing similar colors.
