MANILA, Philippines- Filipinos felt dismayed as former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo been freed after posting a 1 million peso bail this Wednesday.
According to the labor union Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), the said bail made Arroyo freed from her "comfortable" hospital arrest and slammed the Aquino administration for letting the former President released due to the cases done during her rule.
"The Aquino administration should be blamed for Arroyo's release." According to the statement given by KMU. "It has no decisive steps to arrest and imprison Arroyo. Not even filing a lawsuit related to Arroyo's major crimes and anomalies. Shortly before it filed a case against Arroyo while given special treatment."
Meanwhile, Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) also shared the stance of KMU in opposing Arroyo's release through bail.
“We condemn the granting of bail to Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, criminal mastermind of election fraud in 2007, as well as the election prior to that. While we are definitely upset at this development, we are not surprised. This may well have been the result of the rushed case filed in November last year to prevent GMA from leaving the country as the Supreme Court upheld its restraining order on the DOJ travel ban,” said Bayan secretary general Renato M. Reyes, Jr.
Prior to Arroyo's release, she was arrested due to the case of electoral sabotage pending before the Pasay Regional Trial Court. While cause-oriented groups filed cases vs. the former president involving the NBN-ZTE scam, the PCSO scam, as well as civil cases for the arrest and torture of the Morong 43.
Earlier, BAYAN held a protest action at the Pasay RTC to oppose the granting of bail to Arroyo.
