Original Source: How To Open RAR Files
At the end of a lengthy download, to find a .rar extension, especially when you are clueless what to do with it, can get super annoying. This article is going to handle that part of the problem for you: to extract and view such files on Windows or Mac OSX.
Though there are different applications you can use on Windows for .rar files like WinRAR but they are not free. Resultantly, it is preferable to use 7-Zip since it is an open source and it’s free.
First download and install 7-Zip or Winrar. You can find it on their website. Once downloaded, you have to right-click on any .rar file that you want to extract the files from and simply extract the files from the menu that appears. In case of multi-part .rar files, click on the first one.
If you want to see the material in the archived files then click Open Archive from the menu or double click the file.
You can look up other applications for extraction but the free feature of 7-Zip makes it more accessible to use.
As opposed to Windows, Mac OSX has lesser number of choices but there is a free app “The Unarchiver” that supports multi-part archive files. After installation, launch the application where you will have the option of which files you want to open with The Unarchiver. A window similar to this will appear:
To extract the files you just have to double-click the .rar file. It will initiate The Unarchiver to make a new folder with the identical name and your files will be extracted in that folder.
Let me know in the comments if there is any other tool that you use for extracting files other than these programs.
