If the shooting rampage in Colorado wasn’t enough, responsible for the death of 12 people and injuries to 58 others showed up in the court yesterday for the first time with his hair dyed an orange color. He was attired in a maroon jailhouse jumpsuit and was unshaven, giving a shoddy appearance with unkempt hair. He sat through the proceeding stoic, practically motionless and devoid of any expression. The judge advised him of the gravity of the case, seeing his demeanor.
During the court proceeding, at one point, he simply closed his eyes. The entire time while he was there he kept quiet and did not utter a single word. Prosecutors said they were unaware if he had been medicated, as his behavior was abnormal. He seemed dazed and expressionless. This made the victims’ relatives angry. Tom Teves, whose son, Alex, lost his life while saving his girlfriend during the shootout, said, “I saw the coward in court today and Alex could have wiped the floor with him without breaking a sweat," according to The Associated Press.
This court appearance was the first time that everyone was able to see the man responsible for the savage and merciless shootout at the “The Dark Knight Rises” movie show. Everyone was observing and evaluating his each and every move. Experts and psychiatrists were asked for their opinion about his strange behavior on different television channels. Dr. Jeffery Gardere, an assistant professor of behavioral medicine at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, said, “It struck me that this is a person who's been through an emotional maelstrom and therefore might be totally wiped out emotionally."
There could be "a psychotic process going on and we see that being acted out there. Or there might be some sort of malingering going on. In other words, trying to make himself look worse than he actually is. Or maybe a combination of all of those things," he added.
Before his appearance in the court, there was much conjecture that his hair was colored. There were reports that upon his arrest, he told the officers that he was The Joker. The much notorious character in the Batman story, The Joker, has brightly colored hair. The court appearance confirmed that he had indeed dyed his hair. Investigators found a Batman mask inside his apartment. Holmes was wearing a body-armor and had an AR-15 rifle, a shotgun and handgun during the attack. He was arrested shortly afterwards. His apartment was booby-trapped with explosives and trip wires, which took the Colorado police a day to disarm.
The victims’ families want death sentence for Holmes. Everyone now will have their eyes set on the court sentence if that happens or not.
