A Syrian defector has ominously warned that the regime of Bashar al-Assad might even use chemical weapons against the Syrian people as a last resort to protect his regime. Meanwhile, Israeli Defence Ministerhas made it clear that Israel will not hesitate to intervene militarily in Syria if it loses confidence in the regime's ability to safeguard its stockpiles of chemical weapons.
Israel and the United States fear that those weapons might fall into the hands of Syria's Lebanese ally or even into the hands of extremists linked to the Syrian rebels. The US is in quite a conundrum. It wants to see the Middle East free of Iranian influence.
But if Assad goes, Syria might open up to Muslim Brotherhood influence which is a very real possibility that keeps many pro-Israel hawks in the United States up at night. Israel is not taking sides in this conflict as yet. But it might be forced to do just that if Assad loses control of his chemical weapons.
