Borussia Dortmund successfully defended the Bundesliga title in the 2011/12 season. Although FC Bayern Muenchen had a very successful pre-Christmas round, Borussia Dortmund became the run away league winner. The German Soccer Federation Super Cup will be played on August 12th.

Dortmund's performance in the Champions League was mediocre to say the least, while FC Bayern advanced to the final after defeating Real Madrid. As a final favourite against FC Chelsea at home, the Blues became an overwhelming obstacle. They remainded tight in defence just as they had been against FC Barcelona. The game was eventually decided for Chelsea with penalty kicks. Bayern was the runner up again.

One more chance remained for the record champions from Munich when they met the league champion Borussia Dortmund in Berlin. The game became a disaster for he Bayern stars. Although they had a good start, Dortmund eventually took control of the game and overran Bayern 5-2. Runner up titles don't deliver the hardware and this game made it 3-3.

Along came the European Championship in Poland and the Ukraine. Germany was one of the favourites along with Spain and the Netherlands. The German cadre was made up in large parts by Bayern players (eight in all), while only two Dortmund players got the call.

Germany started the tournament with a 10-0 record and defeated Portugal, the Netherlands and Denmark during the Group round. Greece was defeated 4-2 in the quarter final, but it all ended in the semi-final with a 2-1 loss to Italy.

To say the least, FC Bayern has been a disappointment to its fans and the club's management. The DFB Supercup will be seen as an opportunity for the team to redeem itself. The game will be played in the Allianz Arena in Munich and all eyes will be on Phillip Lahm and company to come up with a stellar performance.

Bayern will, once again, have its hands full. Dortmund has won the last four Bundesliga games and also defeated Bayern in the DFB Cup.

With the exception of Kagawa, who will be playing in the Premier league next season, Dortmund and Bayern's lineups remain virtually unchanged.

Bundesliga Season 2012/13

Three new clubs enter the Bundesliga this season. SpVgg Greuther Furth, Eintracht Frankfurt and Fortuna Duesseldorf. The season gets underway on August 24th when Dortmund hosts Werder Bremen.

The new clubs make their debut on August 25th when FC Augsburg hosts Fortuna Duesseldorf, Greuther Fuerth hosts their Bavarian neighbours FC Bayern and Eintracht Frankfurt hosts Bayer Leverkusen.

There will be much anticipation for the new season and the SuperCup on the 12th of August may just set the tempo for the season. Will Bayern be able to overcome its inability to defeat Dortmund or will Dortmund make another sweep.

Regardless of the outcome, it should once again be a terrific season with lots of drama. Stay tuned.
