Air Force Basic Training Dorm Lackland AFB San Antonio, Texas

Skooter reporting 07/21/12

Staff Sgt. Luis Walker, an Air Force instructor was found guilty Friday of rape and sexual assault in a massive sex scandal that has shocked a Texas base, one of the nation's busiest military training centers.

Walker was convicted on all seven counts by a seven-person jury of military personnel at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He faces up to life in prison and discharged dishonorably. Testimony will start Saturday in the sentencing phase of the trial.

There were 12 Lackland instructors investigated for sexual misconduct toward at least 31 female trainees and Walker is among them. Charged were six instructors ranging from rape to adultery, and the first to stand trial was Walker. He faced the most serious charges of all those accused.

Lackland Air Force Base is where every American airman receives basic training. The base has about 475 instructors for the estimated 35,000 airmen who graduate every year. About one in five is female, and about 90 percent are men, went through eight weeks of basic training by a group of instructors.

The women told jurors that Walker won their trust to get them alone in his office or an empty dormitory where he forcefully demanded the women into kissing, touching and have sex with them. Those testifying said they didn't tell anybody at first because they feared being kicked off from the Air Force.

Meanwhile, the case of Staff Sgt. Craig LeBlanc another former Air Force training instructor has been referred to a general court-martial. He is charged with sexual misconduct, obstructing justice and making a false official statement, according to an Air Force statement issued Friday evening.

No trial date has been scheduled.
