A closer look at the movie massacre: more to the sinister plot than meets the eye?

What caused a young neuroscientist to snap, dye his hair red, call himself the Joker (one of the Batman villains, but the killer probably looked more like the villain Bain with his head-to-toe body armor), arm himself with an arsenal of assault rifles, glocks, tear gas canisters, don sophisticated protective gear and go on a shooting rampage?

Slowly, more and more info is emerging about the killer. James Eagan Holmes is described by some who knew him as "quiet, shy, a loner." Others who worked with him say this is completely out of character for the 24-year-old who received his neuroscience degree from the University of California-Riverside in 2010. They say he was brilliant but that is not surprising. Going for your Ph.D. at 24 is pretty impressive.

So what happened? Some are saying this entire tragedy does not add up and that there are too many stark contrasts.

Like the kind of sophisticated body armor Holmes was wearing. Where did he get it? Can one purchase these kind of ballistic protection anywhere and if you can, how much does all this cost including his arsenal of weapons and ammo used to slaughter movie goers and rig his apartment? Where does a neuroscience student who went to community college and whose Ph.D program is sponsored by a government grant, get the money for his stockpile? Reports say his neck, legs, throat and head were expertly protected. He also wore a gas mask. It's starting to feel like a scene out of a science fiction flick, isn't it? Only this was heart-rending and real.

He allegedly used four guns-- two assault rifles and two glocks. It was first reported that he may have had help to help open the theater doors to perform this expertly executed deadly attack on moviegoers. He confused the crowd by first throwing tear gas and smoke bombs then opened fire. Now authorities say he acted alone.

Speaking of science fiction, Holmes' line of study was neuroscience and to add to the stunning irony, his area of study concentrated on "how we all behave." He reportedly gave a presentation in May on the Biological Basis of Psychiatric and Neurological Disorders.

I don't believe in coincidences, and my friends and family think I'm quite weird for this odd quirk. What are the odds that this young man was studying human behavior, dropped out of school just over a month ago and exploded on the public stage as an evil deliverer of death--completely at odds with whom he appeared to be to the world before now? Why did he drop out?

What exactly was he working on or even more importantly for whom or with whom? Did he push himself into the dark side of human behavior with mind-altering drugs, hypnosis, both or was he pushed by other forces pulling the strings?

Was his program sponsored by others besides the university? The entire horror that unfolded inside the Aurora movie theater was cold, calculating, vicious and diabolical. Yet outside he was arrested without incident and he reportedly warned police that his home was booby-trapped. Did he come down off some high?

This is quite odd and a 360-degree deviation from the villainous character who unleashed terror and death on innocent people, including children inside a mere few minutes prior. Why warn police about his death trap at his residence if he was hell-bent on human destruction?

As we learn more and more of Holmes and what he did, the why and how seem even more puzzling. CNN reported that he bought the guns legally, but no one has said anything about the sophisticated military body armor.

Twelve innocent people are dead, dozens more injured, the president has halted his campaigning--down to pulling television ads in Colorado-- as we all attempt to make sense of the bloodshed. But there is no logic to the madness and even more questions than answers.

Is there much more to this sinister plot than we can even fathom?
