The European Space Agency has successfully obtained images of an asteroid 360 million kilometres from Earth. The space photography is part of research that it is hoped will demystify the origins of planets.
The images have been captured by Europe's Rosetta Spacecraft. These are transmitted to a control team in Darmstadt, Germany. The asteroid under the radar is the Steins asteroid. It resides in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
While Rosetta aims to devote 11 years to studying the nucleui of comets, Stein is its first target.
In addition to learning more about our cosmic origins, scientists are hopeful that they can learn more about how to protect our Earth from potential asteroid crashes.
