"The national strategic plan to fight against banana bacterial wilt has been developed in Goma, in North-Kivu province. Thirty experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, UN agencies, humanitarian organizations, research institutions, universities, representatives of customary power and producers, recommended the establishment of a network monitoring and warning", said Florence Marshall of UNPD, Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at the weekly conference of the United Nations in Kinshasa.
The plan has been established during a workshop held in Goma from 10 to 11 July 2012 in Goma on "How to fight against banana bacterial wilt and prevent its progression?"
Banana cultivation is of a great importance in the eastern DRC, both economic, food and cultural. Despite efforts to fight against the disease, it continues to spread. Its growth is observed in areas previously free in Ituri in Eastern Province and South-Kivu.
Moreover, in recent months, similar symptoms to banana bacterial wilt were observed in multiple territories.
