Landing at London Gatwick Airport - May 2010

Although London is one of the most popular U.K. destinations, England has many other sights to offer to curious travelers. One great destination is Sussex, located conveniently close to Gatwick airport. Made up of a number of smaller cities and towns, Sussex is a combination of modern lifestyles and quaint pastoral scenes. There are a number of farms, waterways and historical sites to visit, and the area is within easy driving distance of many other popular tourist destinations like Stonehenge and London.

Sussex offers the best combination of mild climate, historical sites and shopping opportunities. Whether you make it your primary destination or simply travel through on your way to other places, Sussex definitely deserves your time. If you're considering an English vacation, here are five places to visit:

Arundel castle. Dating back to the time of William the Conqueror, Arundel castle was built to secure the nearby river port from invasions. Although the castle fell largely into ruins in the following centuries, it was carefully restored during the 17th and 18th Centuries to its current condition. The view from the castle wall is stunning, providing a panoramic look at the countryside, and visitors can learn a lot of history from touring its grounds.
Battle of Hastings battlefield and abbey. England's most famous battle, the Battle of Hastings, occurred in Sussex in 1066, and visitors can still visit the battlefield. Relive the battle by browsing an expertly built exhibition, or wander the halls of the nearby abbey to get our British history fix.
Bedgebury National Forest. If you're interested in outdoors activities, you must visit Bedgebury forest, the largest pinetum in the world. The 2,000 acre forest is home to a huge variety of native pine trees, providing year-round beauty and serenity. Your whole family can enjoy hiking, cycling and adventure play here.
Middle Farm. If you're looking for a quiet, pastoral visit to the English countryside, you might enjoy stopping off at Middle Farm. This working dairy farm in East Sussex is home to a wide array of animals, and you can stop off for a bite to eat, a cup of tea and a huge selection of fresh cheeses.
Horsham. A cultural center of Sussex, this city provides a combination of historical sites and modern entertainment. From shopping venues to concert halls, there's always something to do in Horsham. There's also lots of historical sites to visit, including a free history museum, and the city holds open air markets every week.

There's something for everyone at Sussex. Whether you enjoy ancient history, modern culture or simply want to enjoy the English countryside, Sussex is an excellent travel destination. It's also located near London, Brighton and other tourist-friendly cities, making it an ideal place to visit while touring the country. After you arrive through Gatwick airport, you can arrange to stay in one of the many nearby hotels to serve as a central base for all of your traveling.
