India's "first superstar" Rajesh Khanna has died in Mumbai at the age of 69. Doctors revealed that he had been admitted to the hospital for quite some time, but the reason of his health problems remained unclear.

Khanna, who had been seriously ill since April, was rumored to be suffering from cancer. However, the news of his illness was never confirmed by his family members.

Khanna was widely known for his romantic roles in his super hit movies of 1960s and 1970s. He worked in 160 Bollywood movies. His all-time hit movies include "Kati Patang", "Aaradhana", "Anand" and "Amar Prem".

The whole Indian nation is saddened at the demise of the great Bollywood legend. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh led an outpouring of grief on Twitter.

“I convey my heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and countless fans and admirers of Shri Rajesh Khana,” said Singh’s official Twitter feed.

Actor Anupam Kher’s message read, “Rajesh Khana gave us a crash course in Romance. He introduced us to a special twinkle in the eye that made us feel good about ourselves. RIP”.

Farah Khan expressed, “Just heard the saddest news. The 1st Superstar of India is no more. But the legend that was Rajesh Khana will live eternally through his films."

As the news of Khanna’s death spread, scores of fans gathered outside his home to pay their tributes and respects to the Indian film industry’s legend.

Khanna’s entry into the Indian film industry came at a time when fans were looking beyond the fading stars of Bollywood. He was the kind of actor for whom Indian movie fans were desperately yearning for. Soon, after his successful movies, Khanna started receiving letters written in blood by his female fans and his cars were marked with lipstick stains wherever he arrived. Rumors have it that his female fans started believing in marrying his photographs.

Rajesh Khanna married actress Dimple Kapadia in 1973, but they separated in the later years of their lives. However, Kapadia returned to look after him during his final days.
