Five members of a family, including three women, hailing from Dadu (Sindh), tried to set themselves on fire after spraying kerosene oil on their bodies in front of the National Press Club (NPC) here on Monday, eyewitnesses told ‘The News’.

According to eyewitnesses, the family members claimed that they had a land dispute with the ‘wadaira’, an influential man in their village ‘Chandio’, who had occupied their land forcibly.

Police deployed for security of the National Press Club, however, foiled the self-immolation attempt and shifted the family members to the Federal Government Polyclinic with the help of journalists. Their condition is stated to be out of danger.

Malook, 28, son of Pasand, resident of Norang Tarandio, Tehsil Mehr, District Dadu, along with four other family members, sprinkled kerosene on their bodies and tried to commit self-immolation. However policemen performing duty outside the press club rushed towards them and managed to overpower them.

The other family members, who tried to commit suicide, were identified as Altaf, 26, son of Gulzar; Farwa, 35, daughter of Pasand; Pari, 18, daughter of Pasand, and 17-year-old Perveen Imam.

All of them were rushed to the Federal Government Polyclinic where they were stated to be in a stable condition. Police have started investigation into matter for legal course of action.
