Pavane, Op. 50 (Gabriel Fauré)

If only the one who never was there

When clouds filled with darkness erased the day

And hearts swept in sorrow had little to say

Would flowers their fragrance still grace the air

-

If only one promise had chosen to stay

When shadows of hope loomed doubt everywhere

And tomorrows’ dreams drift empty and bare

Would morning shed light to take this away

-

If only a tear remembered to cry

To wash away grief and cleanse clarity

-

If only this mind could still endless why

One moment set free a haven to be

-

If only like her I’d chosen to die

Would someone still sing love’s bleak memory
