Dying to be a Somebody

From very early on in life, I remember being repeatedly told

You’ve got to be your own man, and be popular and famous

You’ve got to be a somebody, rather than nobody by the time you are old!

So I studied hard and skipped the joy’s and pleasures of my youth

In order to become a somebody, and to make my journey through life smooth

Yes, I became popular, rich and famous, but never managed to fulfill my youthful desire

To make the world of mankind a better, happier place and to cooperate as the maestro and his chorus

Then it downed upon me that numerous others had come before me, and tried in vain to set the world free

These ones, the brightest, the smartest, the most intelligent of their crop, went back to sleep forever in the dust

Not really achieving all that much, as history sadly reminds us of their valiant efforts to bring mankind hope

By now I am an old, sad and disappointed man, a somebody – writing of his experiences to you with a pen

To tell you do not be like me, and waste your whole life in trying to prove that you are a somebody

For from the moment you were born, you are a somebody – and are as unique and individual ………

As is each beautiful, momentary snowflake that falls down in a terrible blizzard or a storm

Be true to yourself, as only you can be – and don’t switch off your conscience, rather let it be free

Do unto others as you’d like them to do to you, and then your problems in life will be relatively few

For it will be to you a wonderful, true, reliable and a trustworthy companion and life’s guide

And stop you from doing harm to yourself and others, as you are already a somebody – there is no need to hide!
