In his much publicized documentary "An Inconvenient Truth", Al Gore insisted that sea levels would rise up to 20 feet in the near future due to melting ice in Greenland and Antarctica. That's still somewhat more reasonable than alternative documentaries that have already envisioned the inundation of The House of Commons.
But a new study published today suggests that water levels could rise by as little as 0.8 m. Turns out that there are just a lot of uncertainties in the rates of melting ice as well as availability of satellite data. So scientists are more comfortable backing conservative estimates.
Scientists have conducted their most recent calculations by estimating the rate of glacial movement needed to produce water level rises of Al Goresque proportion. Turns out that such glacial velocities have never been encountered in the past and are unlikely to be encountered in the near future.
