Government to issue 'fraud proof' Licenses to timber dealers

In March 2012 Government through the Ministry of Water and Environment, put a ban on timber harvesting in Kabaale. Kyegwegwa, Hoima, Masindi and Buikwe as one of the measures to control defforation in the areas.

Water and Envronment minister Maria Mutagamba says that the Government still maintains this ban until further notes.

'' There is no more harvesting of timber till the Government issues fraud proof Licenses.'' Said Maria Mutagamba, the Water and Environment Minister.

Maria Mutagamba says that the Government will issue fraud proof Licnses with Ministry guidelines to monitor and supervise the harvesting of timber countrywide.

The timber dealers will also have serialized forms to transact timber business for effective monitoring and supervision. According to the Minister Licenses will be given to timber dealers who will have shown capacity to replace trees to be felled.

The charcoal dealers will not be spared at all as the minister advises them to form Associations for easy monitoring and supervision.

Water and Environment Minister says that over 92,000 hectares of forest cover have been lost as a result of increased illegal timber harvesting. Issuing of 'fraud proof' License begins on 1st/August/ 2012.
