DARPA or the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, has just uploaded a breakthrough video on youtube where speakers, that generate an acoustic field, supress a flame. There are two reasons stated for the effectiveness of this approach below the video which include a thinning of the air and the spreading out of the flame. Obviously, it would be important in a less controlled enviroment to account for the effects of such dispersal, but it seems promising.
