The drug mafia in Mexico has literally gone underground but the police are not amused.
With increased checks and surveillance on the roads and the seas to prevent smuggling of drugs between the US and Mexico, the drug mafia have now resorted to tunnels to carry on their activities.
This has been reported in foxnews dated 12th of July 2012.
Two new tunnels at least 150-yards in length have been discovered – one of these is not fully complete but the other is one of an engineering marvel.
The first one began from under a sink in the bathroom of a warehouse in Tijuana and would have crossed the border, possibly into San Diego. The Mexican Army got wind of this and the tunnel diggers escaped leaving it incomplete.
The other one was in a vacant strip mall in the storefront in San Luis in Arizona – it was no ordinary passageway but was a sophisticated one with lighting and ventilation.
So far, a total of 156 secret tunnels had been found since the 1990s, many of these were incomplete – the figure was 70 since October-2008 till date.
Incidentally, in Deember-2009, a 900-feet long tunnel linking San Diego with Tijuana had been found – it was fitted with an elevator at the Mexican side!!
