HEATWAVE SAFETY ADVICE

HEATWAVE HITS THE DODECANESE - MERCURY IN THE RED !

The temperature in the Aegean is expected to reach 35-36 degrees Celsius, while in the Dodecanese the temperature, especially the mid-day hours, is expected to even reach 41 degrees Celsius.
In the occasion of temporary hazardous weather forecast by the National Weather Service, the attention of all and especially citizens who belong to vulnerable groups is demanded by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, Ministry of Public Order and Citizen Protection, Ministry of Health and Social Solidarity and the National Center for Emergency Care.

Particular attention must be paid to the elderly and children who suffer from chronic diseases and those taking medication.

Specifically, in days of heat one should avoid:

  • 1 - the sun
  • 2 - heavy physical work
  • 3 - walking or jogging in the sun
  • 4 - consumption of fat food or alcohol
  • 5 - long trips

And when one has to be active:


  • 1 - dress light
  • 2 - take small, frequent meals
  • 3 - take lots of lukewarm showers
  • 4 - wear black or dark glasses

Particular attention for babies and infants


  • 1 - dress them light
  • 2 - apart from milk, give them extra water and chamomile
  • 3 - eat more vegetables and fruits
  • 4 - do not stay long in the sun
  • 5 - go to the sea between 10 and 1 in the morning or after 5 in the afternoon

Heatwave and the elderly


  • 1 - be kept in a cool shady place
  • 2- keep room closed during hot hours and open at night
  • 3 - and for their families, do not leave them alone for hours
