The positive mpact of rules and regulations in instilling student discipline

One part of the teacher’s job that is more stressing, if not the most stressing and draining, is instilling discipline among students. Students who are lacking in discipline significantly affect the normal and smooth flow of class routines. They catch and draw a teacher’s attention to divert time to them, which disturbs the ongoing process of teaching and learning.
A situation like that can slow down and impair a teacher’s momentum. In some cases it can totally over run the teacher's pace and lesson plan. The teacher must not allow such unruly situation to pass without comment. He or she must deal with it accordingly. Teachers must not tolerate such misbehavior, because it would be unfair for those who are always willing to learn.
In this context, there is a need for the teacher to formulate and implement certain rules and regulations in accordance with needs of the students while in the classroom. A set of instructions that provide guidance and direction for students is quite helfpul. It is as simple as the “Dos and Don’ts” in the room for students to observe, follow and obey. Failures of students to obey the instructions provide bases for the teacher to reprimand and impose punishment against erring students.
Discussing the pros and cons of the rules and regulations with the students is very important at the onset of classes for the school year. It will provide students with the knowledge and information about the existence of the rules, especially when they participate in the formulation and ratification of the same. Henceforth, under normal circumstances, they will serve as deterrence against unruly behavior in the classes.
Obeying rules and regulations will eventually become part of the students' habits, which instill in them the much desired goal of achieving discipline as a key component of their education. Knowledgeable and skilled students who lack in discipline are considered uneducated.
