SARASOTA, Fla. (July 10, 2012) — Shortly after the plea for public help went out, an anonymous tip led to the arrest of two suspects in the attempted burglary of a house where two shots were fired Saturday night.
The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested Michael Sterlace, 26, of the 4100 block of Fruitville Road, in Sarasota, on charges of burglary of an occupied dwelling, unarmed, for the burglary attempt on a Stone Ridge Trail house Saturday night, where the homeowner fired two shots at the suspect before he fled.
Sterlace was found at Sarasota Memorial hospital late on Monday afternoon where he was seeking treatment for a gunshot wound to his right arm. According to the arrest report, Sterlace told police he was shot by a random bullet while fishing.
Also arrested was Taylor Marie Dammann, 22, on charges of resisting without violence. Detectives found Dammann at Sterlace's apartment while executing a search warrant. Dammann was arrested when she refused to provide police with the keys to a 2009 Infinity. The detectives also impounded her 2004 Ford SUV, alleged to have been the getaway vehicle used in Saturday's burglary attempt.
On Saturday night, a woman living in the 4600 block of Stone Ridge Trail confronted an intruder who entered her home after breaking the glass of a French door in the rear of the house. The woman, who said the breaking glass startled her, grabbed her .38 caliber handgun, and fired two shots at him. The intruder managed to make it to a white SUV with Tampa Bay Buccanner license plates and fled the scene.
Police suspect that Sterlace and Dammann may be responsible for other burglaries in the area and an investigation into these are being conducted. Sterlace lives less than 3 miles from the Stone Ridge Trail house he allegedly attempted to burglarize.
According to court records, Sterlace has a criminal record in Sarasota County, including a burglary charge on July 2, 2009, which he pled guilty to and was sentenced to probation. He then violated his probation on Nov. 19, 2010, where he was then incarcerated for the remainder of his sentence. He also pled guilty to five counts of fraud (writing bad checks), forging a public record or document, petty theft, and driving while license suspended.
Dammann was arrested on Feb 10, 2010 in Hillsborough County on battery charges (domestic violence), but the case was dropped by the prosecution on 09/02/2010 Dammann completed the Domestic Violence Intervention Program.
Sterlace is being held in lieu of a $10,000 bond at the Sarasota County Jail. Dammann was released on a $750 bond.
