Ernest Borgnine Dead: Oscar-Winning Actor Dies At Age 95

Famous film and television star Ernest Borgnine died at the age of 95 on Sunday. Borgnine had kidney ailment, said Harry Flynn. His manager, Lynda Bensky, expressed, "It's a very sad day. The industry has lost someone great, the caliber of which we will never see again. A true icon. But more importantly, the world has lost a sage and loving man who taught us all how to 'grow young.' His infectious smile and chuckle made the world a happier place," according to a report on

Ernest Borgnine worked in more than 200 films and TV shows during his lifetime. He also won an Academy award in 1995 for the movie "Marty". His versatility in acting helped him work in many movies and TV series. He was able to mould into any form of acting without any kind of resistance or hesitation. He was in love with theater and spent all his life to make sure that his presence in the showbiz was worthwhile. His old age never became any hurdle for him to act better. Even at the age of 90, he was nominated for an Emmy award.

Ernest, who was very proud to win the Oscar, said in his speech, “You don’t have to be tall, dark and handsome to be a movie star, but I was the first one to prove it,” according to a report by Global Post.

The beefy Ernest knew that his looks were not perfect for a leading actor. His self-confidence played an important part in his successful life. He himself reiterated several times that he was aware of the fact that there were many other better looking actors than him in the industry. But at the same time he also knew that he had the capability to surpass all through his excellent talent and acting skills.

"I played myself because I, too, had been a wallflower at one time," said Borgnine. "I was always the shy one. I was more of a boy scout than I was a man about town. So when the time came I just played myself and it was the easiest thing in the world," he said once.

Against strong competition from Spencer Tracy, Frank Sinatra, James Dean and James Cagney, Borgnine's performance won him the Oscar for best actor.

His other famous works include "The Vikings", "The Dirty Dozen" and "The Poseidon Adventure".
