It was just a little bump, and Fergie wasn't even driving ( a Southport policeman was) but there was a little accident with the golf cart the singer was riding on around the small Southern town where her husband, Josh Duhamel, is filming Safe Haven (written by Nicholas Sparks). Southport, N.C., has been the scene of many different movies: I know What You Did Last Summer; I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, The Birds, Crimes of the Heart, ABC's Revenge, Summer Catch and tv's Matlock staring the late Andy Griffith. Richard Gere liked it so much that he bought a house over on Oak Island. He really enjoyed being so close to the Buddhist Wat (Wat Carolina). The town is small but swells to over 100,000 for the 4-5 days of the NC Fourth of July Festival which is held there every year. It has the reputation of being the longest continuously held 4th of July celebration in NC (started in the1780's).
Julianne Hough is co-starring with Duhamel. Her fiancee, Ryan Seacrest has been seen wandering around town during shooting. A rumor that Johnny Depp was in town over the 4th for a party can neither be confirmed or denied but with Screen Gems Studio in Wilmington, NC (35 miles away) in full swing for several projects including Iron Man 3, it is likely the rumor was true.
Fergie managed to transfix several impressionable young girls who were in town for the fun. She even told the young lady the golf cart "encountered" that she was sorry for the incident and that her funnel cake looked great.
What makes Southport so unique that movie stars like Duhamel feel free to hang out at the local bar? No one bothers them. They are treated just like regular people. Visitors to town are starstruck but the locals have seen them all and welcome them with open arms into the local ranks.
Safe Haven, written by Nicholas Sparks, was set in Southport in the novel and the director and producer are doing their best to recreate it in the movie, including building permanent buildings as part of the set. Sparks is from North Carolina and his books are nearly always set in that state. The production company filmed the area shops and decorations, sponsored a float contest, and filmed the 4th of July Festivities for the movie. Safe Haven is scheduled to hit the big screen in February.
