Double amputee Oscar Pistorius has been chosen to compete in both the individual 400 meters and the 4x400-meter relay at the London Olympics and is set to become the first amputee track athlete to participate at any games.
South Africa’s Olympic committee and national track federation last minute decision cleared Pistorius to run in his individual event. Earlier the Olympic committee announced that the double amputee had been picked only for the relay.
It was reported that the track body asked for permission to also allow Pistorius to run the 400, albeit he had not met their qualifying criteria, Olympic committee chief executive Tubby Reddy told the press.
Pistorius, 25, who runs on carbon fiber blades, called it "one of the proudest days of my life."
