FRANCE 24 Health - Yesterday's diseases, today's concern

Cough, one of the most commonly reported problems, is hardly paid much attention. The common cold that results in cough can be easily treated with over-the-counter medicines and home remedies. These are some of the reasons why people don’t consider cough to be severe and, at times, wait for it to subside on its own.

It is a big mistake as in certain cases cough can be very dangerous for health. One should not be reckless about it and should pay a visit to the doctor if the cough is chronic. Cough, at times, is the body’s positive reaction that clears the throat and airways. However, there are times when it’s a sign of something really serious. Cough is a very common symptom of severe diseases, such as tuberculosis, cancer and bronchitis. It is important to differentiate between common cough/cold and severe cough.

If the cough is persistent, it may be a signal for something serious. Avoiding it and not getting treated can have a severe effect. The problem with the symptoms is that they often disappear and make it seem that things are fine; however, this is often not the case.

Symptoms can be buried deep, down, but the condition continues to worsen. Cough, especially when mixed with fever or other diseases, is a sign of something serious, and should not be neglected. Cough impacts your whole lifestyle. Constant coughing leads to interrupted sleep, tiredness, irritation and often depression. It also repels people who may think you have some contagious disease if you constantly cough.

Continuous coughing can have serious issues. Doctors say that at times, they have to delay surgeries due to the person coughing constantly. It not only interrupts the surgery, but may lead to several other complications.

Intense coughing can also lead to a tear in aorta, an artery that goes up through the heart. Mayo clinic reports that intense coughing can cause serious physical damage. People with weak bones, especially women, run the high risk of cracking bones when coughing too hard. Severe coughing also strains your muscles and chest.

Cough, especially in children, is very dangerous and should be treated right away. Children have weak bones; they need to be protected against all diseases. Normally, cough is caused by a bacterium called bordetella pertussis that lives in the throat and can be easily treated by common medicines. However, if it is persistent and fails to go away, a visit to the doctor is recommended. One should have it treated quickly.
