Darren Taylor is not here to dazzle the Olympic crowd. His only goal is to stay alive. He launches from 35 feet as if he is an eagle and land with a splat into 12 inches of water. The landing is not as dignified as that of an Olympic diver.
This daring jump into a 10ft by 5ft paddling pool holding just 12 inches of water is called shallow diving.
The picture below shows him jumping to break his own record from a breathtaking 35ft 4in height. If one dove head first, it would have lethal consequences.
The technique the diver uses to control the fall is called a bellyflop. The idea is to maximize the surface area that smacks the water. It is taken from physics. The more water you displace the more the body is cushioned.
