A 74-year-old Michigan grandmother has been charged for killing her 17-year-old grandson.
The grandmother in Michigan turned against her own grandson and killed him in a moment of weak judgment. The grandmother, Sandra Layne, killed her grandson and later came out of the house screaming, "I murdered my grandson."
The name of the murdered grandson is Jonathon Hoffman. He was shot on the 18th of May at the West Bloomfield Township condo, where he was living with his grandparents. According to reports, Hoffman and Layne were in a fight, but things turned ugly and the grandmother ended up shooting her own blood.
Sandra Layne is accused of repeatedly shooting Hoffman and now stands trial on murder and firearm charges. The ruling on the case was made on Monday by a judge after he heard a police officer testify that he heard Layne screaming that she had killed her grandson.
According to reports, Layne repeatedly shot her grandson several times. Out of the shots, three landed in his chest. However, Layne's attorney maintained that she acted in self-defense from her grandson.
"This was a child who was dumped on her," defense attorney Jerome Sabbota said, according to a report on msn.com, noting the teen's previous brush-ins with the law. "She killed a person she loved who she was trying to save."
According to reports, officials were notified about the incident by the victim himself. Hoffman called 911 and said, "I've just been shot. My grandma shot me. I'm going to die. Help." The operator asked him to remain on the phone, but just a few moments later, few more shots were heard and the boy told the operator that he had been shot again. When officials arrived at the scene, they heard the sound of three more gunshots and yelled for whoever was inside to come out.
It was at that moment that Layne emerged screaming from the house. Afterwards, she kept asking the officers how her grandson was doing.
Jonathon Hoffman died at the spot and tests later revealed that he had synthetic marijuana in his system.
The case proceedings will now determine what the fate of this grandmother will be.
