The Pentagon announced Friday that Maj. Gen. John W. Nicholson Jr. will become division commander of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg (see: General Officer Assignments http://www.defense.gov/releases/release.
Nicholson previously served as deputy chief of staff of operations for the International Security Assistance Force and U.S. Forces- Afghanistan and is deputy director of the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization in Arlington, Va.
Before his assignment to the Joint Staff, Maj. Gen. Nicholson served as Deputy Commander – Stability of ISAF Regional Command – South.
Maj. Gen. Nicholson was commissioned in the infantry in 1982 from the United States Military Academy (West Point).
In addition to the posts noted above, he has held numerous staff and leadership positions, among them Deputy Director of Operations at the National Military Command Center, J-3, The Joint Staff; Commander of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division; Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of the Army; and Commander of 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division.
He will replace outgoing commander Maj. Gen. James L. Huggins Jr., who earlier this month was nominated for a promotion and a job in Washington.
The 82nd Airborne Division is an active airborne infantry division of the United States Army specializing in parachute landing operations. Based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the 82nd Airborne Division is the primary fighting arm of the XVIII Airborne Corps.
