Video released by NASA today (June 28)
A video recorded on the International Space Station shows the smoke-filled skies of the American West.
The crew, taking part on Expedition 31 on the ISS, recorded a series of images from 240 miles above the surface of our planet.
Huge plumes of smoke can be seen billowing up into clear sky above the Rocky Mountains.
To get a sense of scale, the fires are occurring 120 miles due south of Yellowstone Lake which appears as an irregular blue shape on the upper right of the image1, and Utah’s Great Salt Lake on the left is about 120 miles away.
So far more than 30,000 residents in the Colorado Springs area have been evacuated .
Nearly 350 homes have been destroyed. Two bodies were found in the ruins of one home. But police say fewer than 10 people are unaccounted for.
