Lauryn Hill Failed Tto File Tax Returns On $1.8 Mln In Income - DOJ

Newark, New Jersey--Singer/songwriter/actress Lauryn Hill faces up to three years in prison and a $75,000 fine after pleading guilty to three counts of tax evasion in a Newark, N.J., courtroom on Friday, The Associated Press reported.

The 37-year-old songstress and mother of six admitted she did not pay federal income tax on $1.5 million she earned in 2005, 2006 and 2007. When the judge asked her if she intentionally failed to file her taxes for those years, she reportedly said, "Yes."

Hill's popular album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, " released in 1998, thrust her center-stage in the Hip-Hop arena, earning her an impressive five Grammy awards. Before that, she was the lead singer for the group the Fugees, along with Wyclef Jean, whom she dated for a while. She also acted in the movie "Sister Act 2" and the soap opera "As The World Turns" on CBS.

The multifaceted performer disappeared from the limelight, where she lived in obscurity with her six children, five of whom she had with lover Rohan Marley, son of Reggae "king" Bob Marley.

Rohan, despite giving Hill five children, did not marry her and has since moved on--and has now apparently felt the urge to as Beyonce sang in her song "put a ring on it." Not on Hill's finger, but on his new girlfriend's Brazilian model Isebeli Fontana, to whom he is engaged. He has also denied that he is the father of Hill's sixth child.

Incidentally, this will be the third marriage for the 28-year-old Brazilian beauty and the secord for the 39-year-old Marley.

Hill did resurface to participate in several performances, but has not released any albums that compare to her 1998 solo debut.

The Orange, N.J., native is out on $150,000 bail, and her sentencing will reportedly be in November.
