Private Prisons and Land of the Free - How Prohibition is Profitable

Cannabis sativa often called Marijuana, a slang term coined by the US Government, has been growing naturally for over thousands of years. This sacred plant can be used for the good of mankind. Corporate lobbyism, private industries and corporations have fought to keep this plant’s spiritual effects and medicinal purposes hidden from the general public. In 1937 a tax was passed through congress, making it Illegal to possess or sell. Prior to the Tax Act the US Government supported the production of hemp, because of its very versatile purpose for paper, food, fuel, medicinal purpose, and its cheap low cost to grow. Corrupt and greedy politicians are getting rich off the War on Drugs and have played a big part in the plants prohibition resulting in a severely hurting economy with senseless violence and senseless drug raids that has left American and Spanish family’s in distress.

In many recent studies with modern technology, we have been able to find out that that the most psychoactive property in the plant is Tetrahydrocannabinol also known as THC. Other parts of the plant that contain medicinal purpose Is called Cannabidiol. Also called CBD’s. So far what we have concluded is that these CBD’S can cause cancer cells to “commit suicide” while preserving normal cells. They also fit into the CBD receptors of the human brain perfectly like a key. Every human is affected by THC and CBD’S very differently thus creating different effects and giggly behavior. Nobody has ever died from ingesting too much Cannabis.

Big pharmaceutical companies do not want you to know that Cannabis can kill cancer cells, serve as an anti-inflammatory of the liver, an anticonvulsant for Epilepsy, anti-pain and anti-anxiety and it also helps in the fight against AIDS/HIV. Fighting to keep this plant Illegal will keep them in business as cannabis can virtually replace most medicines from Aspirin to Vicodin. President Obama’s healthcare reform is pushing for every American to have health insurance. Promising cheaper and affordable health care for all, but still has failed to recognize the medicinal value of cannabis. He has went back on his word from his 2008 campaign when he promised he would stop Federal raids on Medical Marijuana dispensaries but recently had many in California shut down by the DEA and IRS.

The Private Prison industry has turned into an Industrial Complex. Richard Nixons war on drugs has turned into a war on people. Private Prison corporations fight to keep Cannabis illegal as for every Forty Two seconds somebody is arrested for cannabis prohibition and possession. The Corrections Corporation of America is the largest private prison industry in the Country. In 2011 they sent letters to 48 different states offering to flat out buy their prison systems. To keep profit up they would have to be at a maximum of 90% full at all times. This Corporation is also listed on the New York stock exchange making it seem to be a gold mine industry as we head towards an ever bigger police state. Inmates are also working for little money and creating goods with very little cost to production. Looking back to history this is a modern day form of slavery. The rights of the inmates are also not being considered or being thought of. The punishment does not always fit the crime.

Our economy and monetary policy is currently in terrible conditions. Many people believe that this plant can turn that around. If human society was able to understand and reap the true benefit from cannabis it could be used as a bartering system where it’s already being used as but instead being dubbed illegal. Cannabis has already proven to be California’s number one cash crop by yielding 14 million dollars alone in the year of 2011 well beating grapes, and bananas. The state of Colorado recently collected more than 3.4 million last year in revenue as well. The Country also spends 7 billion a year to keep the plant illegal.

With that being said, it is my opinion that the money, resources, and time that we spend hurting family’s, our economy, and our mother planet, we can be utilizing this for the greater good of man-kind and for our personal liberties. We can thrive with the freedom of choice of what we can choose to do with our own bodies, without having government and big Pharmaceutical companies involved in that choice. This November Colorado and Washington will have a chance to vote on a bill to make Cannabis legal and to be taxed like alcohol and tobacco. In Colorado more than 61% of people have voted in favor of the bill. Colorado has taken the pilot seat to use marijuana for the right reasons. Hoping that the majority of states join after these two do it is a very hot topic for the 2012 Presidential race. Many are very upset with how the president has lied about Medical weed, and his own use, his actions may have hurt his chance for Re Election as for many voters are users of the drug. Only time will tell what can happen with the future of the plant, but it is obvious that prohibition is only hurting the way we go about our daily lives. People are sick, and the economy is not doing so well. The time has come to be able to enjoy what people have done for thousands of years without being thrown in jail for and that is smoking cannabis.
