Holocaust survivors participate in a beauty pageant, in the northern Israeli city of Haifa.

Fourteen women, aged 74 to 97, walked along a red carpet in the city of Haifa and described their personal sufferings from the Nazis during World War II.

Nearly 300 women from across Israel registered for the competition and contestants were reduced to the final14 who appeared Thursday.

Hava Hershkovitz, 79, who had to flee her native Romania, was declared winner of the pageant .She was crowned by the panel of 4 judges consisting of three former beauty queens and a geriatric psychiatrist who specializes in treating Holocaust survivors chose the winner.

Wearing a glittering tiara, the silver-haired Hershkovitz , was cheered by her granddaughter, Keren Hazan.

"I'm very proud of her because she's the most beautiful woman in the room tonight," Hazan said.

The Holocaust is a delicate subject in Israel, where some 200,000 elderly survivors live. Six million Jews were killed by German Nazis and their collaborators in World War II.

This is just wrong. To mock the deaths of millions is always wrong. Plus, it's Israel doing this to their own people.
