It was the first semi-final of the Euro2012 between the two head teams, Portugal and Spain. The game was so full of dramas that it went all the way down to the wire with penalty shootouts where Spain dominated the Portuguese and qualified for the final.
The match began in a very tense atmosphere with full strengths of supporters for both teams. The starting line-ups were very impressive indeed and all eyes were on Christiano Ronaldo to bring home a dream final match.
The match was extreme and Spain allowed little possession to the Portuguese side, but Portugal had more chances at goal than Spain. Statistically, many games were decided in the dying moments of the regulated time, but this one went further. The full 90 minutes ended in a goalless draw.
The further thirty minutes of extra time were intense as well and neither side could find the back of the net. Andres Inniesta came closest to scoring, but the Portuguese goal keeper did a fine job keeping it away from the net.
It all went down to penalties with Spain having a go at the goal first, but the opposition's goalkeeper saved the shot. On their turn, Portuguese sentand were met with the same result. Both teams stood at 0-0 after the first shots. But then Spanish players went on with the penalty shootout and scored goals, while the Portugal saw their players hit the goal post. The final shootout score was Spain 4 and Portugal 2.
It was the end of the game that was filled with drama and excitement. Portugal was humbled and Spain, who are the World Champions, are into yet another final, where they would meet either Germany or Italy.
