The human body is not a machine; it cannot go on for hours at a stretch. It needs rest to reenergize itself so that its performance remains topnotch.
When we say rest, we don’t only mean sleeping. When you are not working, you are at rest. Sleeping, watching television, listening to the radio, lying on the bed are all forms of rest. How you reenergize your body depends on your choice. But, what happens if you rest too much?
Some negative effects of resting too much are given below:Obesity
Research says that people who sleep 10 hours or more are more likely to gain weight. The association between obesity and sleep remains the same, even when exercise and food intake are taken into consideration. When we rest too much, we fail to burn calories that accumulate in our body and make us heavier. Resting too much is a major cause of obesity.Back pain
There was a time when anyone with a backache was bedridden. But, those times are long gone. Doctors have realized the importance of mobility and now prefer exercising over resting. Staying in the same position for too long puts pressure on your back, this leads to backache. In order to counter this, one should make it a habit to curtail bed rest and do more healthy activities.Depression
One of the main causes of depression is insomnia; however, oversleeping can also lead to depression in some cases. If all you do is turn into a couch potato or rest on your bed, you will start feeling depressed. Studies say you do not always need an ‘issue’ to trigger depression; unhealthy activities can also cause your brain to stress as your brain needs healthy activities for proper functioning.Death
A correlation between life expectancy and sleep exists. No one knows the reason for this yet, but it is believed that people who sleep 10 or more hours have a shorter lifespan than those who sleep 6-7 hours. However, not sleeping enough also affects longevity.Diabetes
Researchers found that people who sleep more than 9 hours each night have a 50% more risk of diabetes than people who sleep for 6-7 hours each night. The exact cause for this relationship is yet unknown, but researchers believe it is indicative of underlying medical issues that increase the chances of diabetes.Heart Disease
The chances of heart disease increase if you over rest. The exact cause is unknown; however, it is believed that it is because the blood does not flow properly due to too much rest, causing coronary problems.Other Problems
Headache is another problem that arises out of over resting. Rest is good when you are feeling tired or nauseated; however, if you rest too much your brain will feel dull. The effects of resting too much also show in old age when you start losing mobility, as your bones turn fragile due to too much rest in the earlier times.
