Euro 2012: Spain eliminate Portugal on penalties

Spain won a penalty shoot-out 4-2 over Portugal early Thursday to advance to the Euro 2012 final match.

The match ended 0-0 after extra-time. The Spanish will now play the winner of Germany vs. Italy.

When the 90 minutes of regular play expired, the scoreboard still read 0-0, and even after 30 additional minutes of overtime, neither team was able to put the ball past the other side’s keeper. Still, there was no question that Spain was playing a better match.

In the shootout, Xabi had the first attempt saved by Rui Patricio. But Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas then saved Joao Moutinho's shot. Iniesta, Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos then all scored for Spain, while Pepe and Nani scored for Portugal.
