The official Syrian news agency, SANA, said that the Syrian Al-Ikhbariya satellite channel was targeted on Wednesday as an armed group attacked the television headquarters, killing three reporters and four guards.
According to SANA, gunmen broke into the TV headquarters, bombing several studios, including its newsroom. Before they disappeared, the attackers planted several explosives in the office.
“The terrorists planted explosive devices in the headquarters of Al-Ikhbariya following their ransacking and destroying of the Satellite Channel studios, including the newsroom studio which was entirely destroyed,” SANA added.
The Al-Ikhbariya satellite channel is known to be a government media mouthpiece that disseminates propaganda for the Assad regime in its fight with the opposition.
This comes as Syrian President Bashar al-Assad claimed in a statement on national media late Tuesday night, “When we're in a state of war, all of our politics has to be concentrated on winning this war.”
In another development, 65 people were killed during clashes in Damascus between regime forces and opposition forces. Syria's elite Republican Guard forces battled rebels in some of the most intense fighting involving the special forces , according to the Syrian observatory for human Rights report.
Earlier on Tuesday, Russian media reported that arms trade between the Syria and Russia is continuing as Russia still plans to provide Syria with combat aircraft and helicopters within the framework of a deal worth $500 million. At the same time, I feel that Russia will not continue to support Syrian regime and its now looking for a replacement guarantee its interests in Syria. The reason behind this feeling what I have read today in the Arabic media stating that the Syrian oppostion started communications with Russia assuring them that nothing will change with Russia after the fall of Assad regime.
I am against the targeting of civilian targets, however much I differ with them. Therefore, I denounce the attack against the Syrian TV channel and the killing of civilian reporters and employees. .
