Russianis on an official visit to Israel. He has held detailed meetings with his Israeli counterpart, , and Prime Minister and discussed issues of mutual interest in detail. After having a detailed interaction with Putin, the Israeli president said that Israel believed Russia would never support Iran in obtaining nuclear weapons. Peres said that Russia always supported the stance of Israel on Iran and hopefully would continue supporting the peace and harmony in the region. The Russian president was warmly welcomed by his Israeli counterpart at the official residence in Jerusalem.
A few hours after Putin reached Israel, he held a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and said that both the countries were on the same page on the controversial nuclear program of Iran. He also assured Israel that Russia would continue to work with Israel until Iranian nuclear standoff is resolved. Putin said that both the sides had discussed Iran’s nuclear program in detail and efforts would be made to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Apparently, statements made by Putin have sent a good message across the globe on resolving the Iranian crisis through dialogue and negotiations.
Shimon Peres also appeared upbeat after he discussed the issue with his Russian counterpart in length. He said that Israel was sure Russia would pressure Iran to suspend the nuclear enrichment and scale back the nuclear program. It may be pertinent to mention here that Russia and Israel have not enjoyed very good relations, but the current official visit of the Russian president is being seen as a move in the right direction. The United States and Israel believed that Russia was supporting Iran to develop the nuclear program. However, the recent visit of Putin to Israel has managed to dispel the impression.
The United States and Israel suspect that Iran has been trying to covertly develop nuclear weapons by using enriched uranium. However, Iran denies the charges and says that the country’s nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. The top Iranian leadership claims that the nuclear program of the country is for electricity generation and research purposes. On the other hand, a number of security and defense experts believe that the US is fast getting frustrated with the stubborn attitude of Iranian officials.
Shimon Peres also informed his Russian counterpart about the explicit threats Iran was making to Israel. He said Israel is a peaceful country and does not threaten any person or country. Iran’s Brigadier General Mustafa Izadi, deputy chief of staff of the country’s armed forces, recently said that Israel would be wiped out from the face of the Earth if Iran is attacked. He threatened in unequivocal terms that if Israel initiated any military action against the nuclear program of the country, Iran would eliminate Israel.
