Update: Surface tablet will be wi-fi only at first, says report.
Microsoft’s CEOunveiled Surface tablet in Los Angeles on Monday night. The new tablet is designed in a way to directly compete with Apple’s iPad. However the details like price, estimated battery life, processors are yet to be released. The company even did not reveal Surface’s RAM allotment. You have to wait for sometimes to know the details.
There are two versions of Surface tablet, one with traditional Intel chips while the other using ARM Holdings.
The ARM based tablet consists of a detachable rubber keyboard which can also act as a cover for it. The touch screen is made of 10.6 inches large Gorilla glass with 9.3 millimeter thickness. Surface works on the Windows RT operating system which was specially developed for tablets to run on low power chips.
The device weighs less than 1.5 pounds and comes with a 0.7 millimeter thick kickstand to hold it upright. It also has 2 USB slots and a 3 millimeter thick touch keyboard cover which snaps on using magnets. Front and rear facing HD cameras are also present in it. Though the company does not disclose mega pixel details so far.
The weight and measurement of Surface are almost similar to Apple’s latest iPad which is 9.4 millimeter thick and weighs 1.3 pounds. Surface is apparently 0.1 millimeter thinner than the latest iPad. Surface’s 10.6 inches screen is larger than 9.7 inches of iPad. The screen size of Surface also comes in a friendly 16:9 aspect ratio, the industry standard for HD which is more suitable to watch videos compared to iPad’s 4:3.
The ARM based tablets will be available with 32GB and 64GB memory and will be priced competitively. You can expect Surface’s price tag from $499 to $829 like iPad depending on the model.
The slightly thicker version of Surface which is less than 14 millimeter thick and weighs under 2 pounds will run on Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 Pro operating system. The company develops the much anticipated Windows 8 operating system keeping tablets in mind. Though nobody knows when Windows 8 will hit the market.
The pro version will have a stylus so that users can make handwritten notes on documents like PDF files. You can buy this version at the cost of an Ultrabook. It is expected to release three months after the ARM version. The pro version will be available in 64GB and 128GB.
The touch keyboard is similar to Apple’s lightweight Smart Cover but comes with a full flat QWERTY keyboard. You can also opt for a thicker keyboard with depressible keys. The built-in keyboard in Surface surely makes it more user friendly than the iPads.
By launching Surface Microsoft is trying to convince users that a tablet with detachable keyboard can replace their laptops.
