Lately a lot of media attention has been on, Congress and President Obama over the program known as ‘Fast and Furious’. The current stalemate between Republicans in the House of Representatives and Holder seemed to escalate recently and could be a problem for President Obama later on.
Arms from Fast and Furious have been involved in numerous crimes in both Mexico and here in the United States, including the murder of two border security guards. The arrests that were supposed to happen due to this program have yet to happen and is highly doubtful will ever happen. This operation appears to have been poorly undertaken and now with many of the weapons missing it seems there was little gain.
Holder has for months now been stalling in releasing documents and e-mails about the operation. President Obama has now become involved by enacting Presidential ‘Executive Privilege’. Before the President enacted this I felt inclined to believe that he was not involved or knew very little about this program. By his actions I know question how much Obama knew about the program.
In an effort to keep the documents secret the current administration has now thrust themselves into the ongoing battle. By doing this is it now right to ask the question how much did the President know? This could be a dangerous political game the President is playing. If there is some sort of national security at stake or ongoing investigations then come out and say so, do not hide behind smoke and mirrors. Please give us a reason for keeping the documents a secret. However, if the documents really do contain nothing as some suggest then why withhold them?
The administration has also opened themselves up to swaying public sentiment. Which is stronger, the administration protecting documents or a grieving family who lost their loved one to a weapon that was part of this program?
Of course there is another factor to consider if you are talking politics that falls into an even bigger scheming realm. The documents are harmful to certain Republicans and by holding onto the documents until it gets closer to the election Democrats can reap a windfall of voter anger. This last one is purely fiction, yet, the way politics is played these days not unlikely.
It seems unlikely that we will know the truth anytime soon about who or what is being protected.
