Republican presidential candidatehas softened his stance on immigrants. He said on Thursday, while addressing a convention of Latino-elected officials in Florida, that the United States should give legal status to those immigrants who have been serving in the US army. Romney also said that legal status should also be awarded to those who are highly qualified and have professional degrees in different subjects. He, however, said there is a need of a long-term immigration reform and he will put it into practice after winning the upcoming presidential election.
The United States is all set for presidential election in November. A neck to neck competition is expected between Democratic Presidentand GOP candidate Mitt Romney. Both the candidates have been giving their policy statements on different issues and trying to convince electorates to vote for them.
Mitt Romney is charismatic and a business tycoon. He is considered a good candidate for the presidency for his expertise in economic affairs. Romney claims that he will overturn the bad economy shortly after assuming the office.
During primaries, Mitt Romney took a tough stance on immigrants and even demanded deportation of illegal immigrants. But now he has changed his position owing to reasons he elaborated on Thursday. He said the United States should respect the immigrants who follow the US laws, culture and traditions. He, however, discouraged the people from coming to the United States illegally. During his speech, Romney also took a jibe at President Obama for his temporary policy on immigrants. He said there is a dire need for proper legislation on immigrants instead of resorting to the temporary measures.
However, the nearly twenty-minute speech of Mitt Romney was met with tepid applause as the people gathered on the venue were little impressed by Romney’s views on the issue. Critics say that Romney tried to cover up the policies he had espoused for years on the immigration. They opine that Romney would not be able to change minds of the people about what he had been proposing a few months back. Critics also say Mitt Romney tried his best to allure electorates through the spicy speech, but failed.
Mere allegations on President Obama will indeed not work and Romney will have to do something concrete and tangible to change minds of the people.
Recently, while addressing a ceremony in Ohio, Mitt Romney said that he would overhaul the entire tax system of the country and devise a strategy to give more freedom to the free market. He alleged that President Obama had stifled the free market’s ability to create jobs and this might be the only reason behind soaring unemployment among youth.
