Situated on the foothills of Western Ghats, Sakleshpur is a beautiful hill station in the Hassan district of Karnataka. Besides, Sakleshpur, which is located at an average elevation of 949 metres, has a fort, several temples and trekking routes.

There are two versions on the origin of the name of Sakleshpur. According to one legend, a broken Shivalingam was found in the town several centuries ago. Since then the place was known as Shakaleshwara. According to another, the town was known as ‘sakala aishwaryagalinda kudida pura’, which literally meant ‘the place is home to all kinds of wealth’.

Among the major attractions in Sakleshpur is Manjarabad Fort. The fort was constructed by Tipu Sultan (ruler of Mysore) as a strategic defensive location. The fort is situated at an altitude of 3240 ft above the sea level.

The Kukke Subrahmanya Temple is believed to the residence of Lord Subramanyeshwara. Shrines of Lord Ganesha, Saraswati Devi and Adi Subramanyeshwara Swamy are also situated in the vicinity.

Bisle Ghat is a popular destination for the tourists. The surrounding mountain ranges can be seen from here. The nearby Bisle Reserve Forest is home to vast collection of flora and fauna. In fact Sakleshpur is listed as one of the 18 most diverse spots that harbour rich flora and fauna.

Jenukal Gudda, which is the second highest peak in Karnataka, is situated at this place. Jenukal Gudda, which meant ‘honey-stone mountain’, is a popular viewing point. Agni Gudda, which means ‘fiery mountain’, is a favourite site for the trekkers.

Moodabidri, an ancient centre of Jain learning, is another popular tourist attraction in Sakleshpur. A newly-constructed Shiva temple, situated near Hemavathi River in front of the famous Shakaleshwara Temple, attracts tourists in large numbers. The hill station is known for its tea, coffee, pepper, cardamom and ginger plantations. Coffee is the most popular purchase here by the tourists.

Mangalore, about 100 km away from Sakleshpur, is the nearest airport. The town has a railway station. Sakleshpur is well connected by road. The temperature in Sakleshpur ranges from a minimum of 10 degree centigrade in winter and a maximum of 40 degree centigrade in summer. The best period to visit Sakleshpur is from October to March.

Sakleshpur does not have many high-end hotels. The accommodation options include lodges and resorts in the nearby villages. Homestays are very popular in Sakleshpur. They are located near the Western Ghats. Hassan, the district headquarters, has some hotels and resorts.
