Madrid Spain. Olympic tennis champion Rafael Nadal who recently his seventh French Open title and his 11th Grand Slam tennis title was the unanimous choice of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) to be carrying the Spanish flag at the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London in July.

COE president Alejandro Blanco said of the decision of Nadal being selected to carry the Spanish flag at the Olympics."They didn't only consider sporting achievements, but also the current standing of the individuals, and their revelance at a national and international level. It had to be Rafael Nadal."

Nadal has competed in the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympic Games winning the gold medal in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in singles tennis.

Nadal will succeed Olympic rowing champion David Cal who was carried the Spanish flag at the ceremony in Beijing China in 2008.
