
Charlotte North Carolina. St. John's University assistant head coach Mike Dunlap has been hired by Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan to be the new Charlotte Bobcats head coach of the basketball team the university said Tuesday morning.
A source with the National Basketball Association (NBA) told ESPN The Magazine Chris Broussard the Bobcats will make the hiring official on Wednesday in a news conference in Charlotte.
Jordan was impressed with a a second interview with Dunlap on Monday due to his reputation from Dunlap's colleagues in college and the professional ranks as a teacher of the game.
Dunlap replaces former coach Paul Silas who coached the team for one year and the Bobcats ended up with the league's worst record at 7 wins and 59 losses. Silas contract was not renewed by the Bobcats.
Dunlap has never been a head coach in the professional ranks and was head coach of the St. John's basketball team in the 2011-12 college basketball team on an interim basis while head coach Steve Bunin took a leave of absence due to illlness.
Dunlap has been an assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets for two years under Nuggets head coach George Karl. He has been an assistant coach at St. John's University, University of Oregon and the University of Arizona is included in his resume.
