At approximately 5:30am on the morning of Thursday, June 14 a Liberty Lake Fire Department truck was racing to a fire when they noticed smoke coming from the Big Trout Lodge apartment building. They called it in and another fire truck was dispatched. Twenty-five year old Kevin Ellison jumped out of his third floor window and was taken to the hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. No one else was injured as the police were able to evacuate all of the residents. There was $50,000 damage to the building. At the hospital Ellison told Spokane Valley Fire Marshal Clinton Mehaffey that he had "set the fire with a marijuana stuffed cigar because God had told me to." However he had told another investigator that he "just wanted to get out of it and for it to all just go away."
In 2004 Kevin Ellison was a much sought after high school star football player. He played both running back and linebacker for the Redondo Union High School. During his high school years he ran for 3,718 yards and made 297 tackles. It's no wonder that USC head coachrecruited him to play at USC. Ellison did not disappoint his coach. In his freshman year he was used primarily as a special teams player and a backup safety. Still he managed to impress enough to be selected by the Sporting News for the PAC-10 All-Freshman Team. The future looked bright when Kevin was named as the team's starting safety in 2006. In 2007 he was again named as the starter and had another solid season. He suffered a knee injury and missed most of the 2008 season but was still drafted in 2009 by the NFL's San Diego Chargers. He played sporadically for the Chargers and was picked up on waivers by his old USC coach Pete Carroll who was now the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. On May 24, 2010 Kevin was arrested during a routine traffic stop for possession of a controlled substance. The substance turned out to be vicodin which he was using for his injured knee. The charges were dropped. However, by September 2011, his play had dropped off and he was released by the Seahawks. Kevin recently joined the Arena Football League's Spokane Shock and has been playing both linebacker and defensive end for the team.
Kevin has been suspended by the AFL pending the outcome of the investigation into the fire. Shock general manager Ryan Rigmaiden has said that Ellison has also told him that God had told him to set the fire. Shock owner Brady Nelson said that Ellison had been behaving strangely and had been sending texts claiming that he wasand was preparing for the Second Coming. Ellison faces federal arson charges. He has been suspended by the league pending the outcome of the investigation.
