Latino votes elusive tobut attractive to Obama: A commentary
Anchor for Allvoices
Romney is no less than a stranger in the Latino block because his party is known for its anti-Hispanics leanings. Republicans see it very meritorious to choke granting citizenship to Latinos. They pose to post another anti-Latino agenda through non support of the DREAM ACT as Romney carries it on his platform.
Romney said it loudly and clearly that he would oppose the DREAM ACT if elected president. He gave the irony that still a presidential candidate he is already making a categorical policy statement of non support for such proposed measure. Romney’s statement is more than enough to drive Latino votes away. If Romney pushes them away through his programs of government, how will they support him if they are antagonized and estranged?
More than being antagonized and estranged, Romney threatens them of self-deportation. This is to excise the imbibed spirit of being law abiding, depriving them of the enthusiasms and spirits to feel, being identified, become productive, live and die in the U.S as Americans.
Latinos do have the Whiteness but probably, not Romney’s “American Whiteness.” They have the feelings of Americans but perhaps, not Palin’s “real Americans.”
So, the racism every Latino sees on the face and feels from the heart, mind and soul of Romney is more than enough to make his/her vote elusive to the presumptive Republican presidential candidate.
Lastly, the Latino block is a known Obama bailiwick. They are comfortably identified with Obama because they feel at home with him. He listens and feels American with them without any trace of slight estrangement and alienation. He sees what they do as parts of American society hence, feels what they need.
Though, they noticed that Obama did not perform as much to improve the U.S economy, however, they were not dumb not to know the reasons. They knew very well that Republicans did not support Obama. Instead, they crucified Obama in the halls of the U.S Congress.
This fact alone gives them the comfort being with Obama. Although, American Whiteness is hidden in Obama, Latinos see the Whiteness of an American in him and they feel being real Americans with President Obama.
The Latino vote is worth pondering upon. It is worthy of reckoning. It is something not to be missed, be estranged, alienated and not driven away. Latino vote is a Washington D.C racer, runner and president maker.
Can a serious presidential candidate afford to miss and waste the vote of a Hispanics? Undoubtedly, Romney can in exchange of American Whiteness and Palin’s real Americans.
